Dolpo Trek Itinerary

12 Days

Overview

The Dolpo short trek offers a remote and authentic Himalayan experience in the isolated region of Lower Dolpo. This itinerary is ideal for trekkers who want to explore Dolpo within a limited timeframe, without tackling the extreme high passes of Upper Dolpo.

The journey begins with scenic flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal, the gateway to the region. From here, the trail follows the Thuli Bheri River through beautiful landscapes of pine forests, narrow gorges, suspension bridges, and traditional villages influenced by Tibetan culture.

As you enter Shey Phoksundo National Park, the scenery becomes more dramatic and untouched. The park is the largest in Nepal and is home to diverse wildlife, unique flora, and striking alpine terrain.

The highlight of the trek is the stunning Shey Phoksundo Lake, famous for its deep turquoise color and pristine surroundings. The nearby Ringmo village provides a glimpse into ancient Bon and Buddhist traditions, with stone-built houses, prayer flags, and centuries-old monasteries.

This trek combines:

  • Spectacular natural beauty
  • Rich Tibetan-influenced culture
  • Peaceful trails with fewer trekkers compared to Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit

Although shorter in duration, the trek still requires good physical fitness, with daily walking hours ranging from 5 to 7 hours on varied terrain. Accommodation is mostly in basic teahouses, offering simple but comfortable stays.

Highlights

  • Deep blue alpine Phoksundo Lake
  • Traditional Tibetan-style Ringmo village
  • Waterfalls (including Nepal’s highest)
  • Remote wilderness with fewer trekkers
